More Than Skeletons In The Closet

Somehow over time, our closets seems to double in size and loose all sense of organization. We say we will get rid of clothes, but end up with the same old excuses: “but it’s so cute,” “I promise I will wear it,” or “it doesn’t fit now, but I’m going to loose weight.” Don’t fall into the trap! It’s a great feeling to clean out your closet of “too smalls” and “too olds”, leaving you with a wardrobe of “just rights.”

We think the best way to go through your clothes is by sorting them into categories. First, take everything (and we mean everything) out of your closet. This way you won’t be tempted to keep anything you shouldn’t. Now start sorting all items into one of the four categories: keep, trash, donate, and unsure. Once everything is sorted, all the clothes in the ‘keep’ pile can go back into your closet. Things that go in the ‘trash’ pile are any items that have been too worn, i.e. holes or stains. Obviously the items that end up in this pile can be thrown away.

Items that don’t fit anymore or aren’t your style anymore, but are still in good shape get put into the ‘donate’ pile. This pile can be taken to a consignment shop to try and sell, or simply donate to a charity of your choice. Finally, the ‘unsure’ pile is for items that you truly cannot decide on. There are a few options for what to do with the ‘unsure’ pile. You can go through it again and again until each item is in one of the three other piles. Another option is to tape up the ‘unsure’ pile into a box and put it in the back of your closet. After one month, if you haven’t missed any items in the box, take it to be donated. No peeking or you’ll be tempted to pull out some pieces!

A final way to go through your clothes throughout the year is to turn all your hangers around backwards. Once you wear an item of clothing, turn the hanger to face the correct way when hanging it back up. This helps show you exactly what pieces you haven’t worn and hopefully making it easier to get rid of them. We hope these spring cleaning tips help you tackle your closet, no matter how daunting it may seem.
