I’m sure we all have multiple face masks tucked away in cabinets and under our bathroom sink. Do you even need to use a face mask in your skin regimen? How often do you need to use it? What type of mask should you be looking for? There can be a lot of unclear guidelines when it comes to face masks, but here at Beauty Coach we have answers to all your face mask questions!
Face masks can come in a variety of shapes and sizes (so to speak). Typically people think of clay masks, but now there is a growing popularity of sheet masks and peel off masks. So how are you to know which is right for you? It all depends on your type of skin and the skin concern you want to address.
Clay masks are great for detoxing and unclogging pores, mud masks are for cleansing and nourishing, sheet masks are less messy and usually have higher potency, overnight masks are hydrating and nourishing, and peel off masks are perfect for drawing out impurities. If you have dry skin, we would recommend any mask that will be moisturizing. Look for masks to brighten and hydrate your skin such as Farmacy Honey Potion Renewing Antioxidant Hydration Mask with Echinacea GreenEnvy. Honey works well to hydrate the skin and helps to reduce inflammation.
If your trouble area is oily skin and pesky breakouts, try using a clay mask or peel off mask. We love using the Vichy Pore Purifying Mask for a clear complexion and softer skin. Another cult favorite at Beauty Coach is the SHILLS Blackhead Remover Peel-Off Black Mask that will give your pores an ultra deep clean! Maybe you’re lacking some moisture in your skincare routine. To wake up with fresh, plump skin we recommend Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask. If your biggest concern is an anti-aging mask, look no further! The Lancome Génifique Youth Activating Second Skin Mask is everything you need from the easy to use sheet mask application, to each mask being highly saturated with the advanced Génifique serum.
Now that you know what type of mask to look for, how often are you supposed to use it? If you are using a hydrating mask, the good news is you can use it every day if you want! Typically face masks say to use 1-2 times a week, and we think that is a good place to start, but also just listen to your skin. If your new exfoliating clay mask worked great to detoxify your skin, but also left your skin feeling a little dry, then maybe only use it once a week. Or follow that abrasive mask with an ultra hydrating one! If your mask contains more potent ingredients, such as glycolic or salicylic acid, limit your use to once or twice a week so you don’t end up with overly irritated skin.
Feel free to mix and match your face masks to suit your personal skincare needs. Just remember to listen to your skin and keep it hydrated!
