As many of you know, every year in June, we celebrate LGBTQ Pride. For those of you that don’t know, Pride Month is celebrated in honor of the 1969 Stonewall riots. Pride month celebrates and recognizes the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals have made locally, nationally, and internationally in history.

Now, just because June is over, doesn’t mean the celebrations stop! With recent Pride marches, celebrations, and awareness taking place all over the world, we want to continue to encourage self- expression, equality, and unique/diverse culture among the LGBTQ community and its allies by creating a safe space for conversations and awareness.

Here’s how you can continue to support the LGBTQ community, no matter when or where:

1. Support!
Pride events are at the heart of it: supporting your fellow humans. Create dialogue with those with similar mindsets, but more importantly: those that don’t. Pride is about acceptance and understanding, regardless of how different someone might be from you. Support the LGBTQ community, support human uniqueness. Support humans.

2. Volunteer!
Pride events across the world are formed with amazing groups of volunteers who are dedicated to execute the events. As a volunteer you’ll be a symbol of training and support for a movement free of discrimination, disrespect, and discouragement. Find local Pride events near you and sign up! Be a part of the movement!

3. Know the issue, educate yourself!
The LGBTQ community, despite continual support, also have those who oppose of the movement and people. Unfortunately, there are those that still feel a need to discriminate, so to combat that let’s all encourage an open communication, an educated stance, and a love and understanding for this beautiful community. Be an ally. Use your voice. Support, support, support.

4. Advocate
In recent political news, we hear of constant discrimination towards members of the LGBTQ community. Support your fellow humans by advocating against these biases. Pick up the phone and call your senators, write letters, send emails. Continue to advocate for these individuals and be there to support them. Create a safe space, and stand up for them in moments of injustice.

Remember: we’re all human, and we all should love and support one another, no matter the differences.
