A Minimalist Approach To Negative Space

Here at Beauty Coach, we’ve talked about it before. Nude nails, negative space nails, bare nails… but what we haven’t talked about is all of these: together. In other words, we want to talk about a trend that’s been soaring in LA in recent weeks. Minimalist nails are the new glam nails, and we want to help you get these perfect summer looks for… well…minimal!

To start off, our first look is a simple nude French manicure. To get this look, apply a clear basecoat, like Butter London’s ‘Horse Power’ Nail Rescue Base Coat which strengthens the nail and prevents breakage. Next, instead of using a classic white, switch it up with a nude nail color like Essie’s The Wild Nudes 2017 Collection Nail Polish in the color Wild Nude or Skinny Dip. French manicures are perfect because you get the most minimal look without going bare. And for an added touch, try switching out the tip color! The options are endless for this chic spin on the French manicure.

Next, a minimalist favorite is using that negative space, and going bare. Or if you want to step it up a notch, add tiny flowers, dots, and jewels. First, apply a basecoat again. This time, try Smith and Cult’s Base Coat: Basis of Everything. This basecoat gives off a pink tint which, although perfect for all different looks: will look especially well if you’re planning to go mostly bare. Next, use a nail dotting tool to either put a simple dot on your nails, or put a tiny flower in the corner. If you want to do something a little extra, we suggest trying out Cina Nail Creation’s Dial-A-Gem: a wheel of different colored jewels that are perfect for that minimalistic look.

Finally, you can’t go wrong with stripes. Here at Beauty Coach, we recommend painting your nails a neutral color first. Try OPI’s Infinite Shine Set colors like Pretty Pink Perseveres, Reach for the Sky, or Linger Over Coffee. Then, add a wild colored stripe right across the base. From greens, reds, yellows, and blues: the opportunities are endless. Be sure to pick colors that contrast your base color to make sure that your nails really stand out. After all, minimalistic doesn’t have to mean boring!
